“New Generation” Sisal Scratch Pads - Disposable and Replaceable
*patent pending

Crijo utilizes Sisal in the manufacture of “Scratch Pads” for felines. Crijo utilizes Sisal because it is a natural material (vegetable) which compliments the need for a feline to scratch and the Sisal is not harmful to a felines skin or claws. Crijo Scratch Pads are designed in a manner where they can be easily replaced when stained or worn. Crijo Scratch Pads are high quality and very beneficial to a feline because it encourages stretching and scratching thereby promoting exercise and limiting stress.

Now then what we know about Sisal. Liquids will stain and shrink Sisal. Surely we all know that a Sisal Scratch Pad can be contaminated. Crijo makes no claim that the scratch pad(s) can be disinfected if contaminated and continue to maintain its shape, appearance, and original quality.

Based on information available - sisal can be cleaned.

NOTE:  When cleaning crijo scratch pads hand vacums and hand held hair dryers are currently being utilized by maintainance crews.

ON CLEANING SISAL FLOOR COVERING

Recommended care and cleaning for natural fiber floor coverings

• Visible and loose Dirt- Should be regularly picked up with a broom or vacuum cleaner. Easily clean because dirt will not cling to the hard, non-static fibers. Regular cleaning is necessary because loose particles of dirt reduce the life span of the floor covering with their scouring effect.

• Water – Can dissolve dirt partials and bring them to the surface. This may cause watermarks to form. Therefore spilled water or water from plant containers must be dabbed immediately with an absorbent white cloth and then dried with a hair blow dryer.

• Spills – Which are still moist, are the easiest to remove. Remove the spills promptly by scrapping up solids and blotting up liquids. Follow by dabbing with  damp cloth of water (add white vinegar to the cloth to cut grease). Dry with cloth or hair blow dryer.

Spot Removal and Overall Cleaning:
It is important during cleaning that the amount of moisture be controlled. The recommended method of spot removal and overall cleaning are dry cleaning products. For spot removal we recommend the K2R product, following the directions on the can (available in hardware or grocery stores). For overall cleaning we recommend the “Host System” or “Capture System” listed in the yellow pages under “Carpet Cleaning”.

Use the following Natural Fiber Directions: (Floor Coverings)
Use a cleaning machine with standard brushes and do not use prep or other liquids. Apply a small amount of cleaning powder “sponges”. Apply a smaller amount than you would for regular carpets and do more brushing with the machine. Make sure the cleaning sponges are evenly spread across the covering, then let sink in till dry. This period can vary between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on how dirty the covering is, how quickly the sponges have been applied, and the humidity of the room. During the drying period, the cleaning substances contained in the sponges will cling to the dirt. When completely dry, vacuum with an upright, using an all brush agitator in both directions. Repeat a second time without using any additional sponges. Brushing in the direction of the rows will help loosen the sponges trapped in the surface.

Sisal is a natural fiber derived from the leaves of the Agave  a plant native to Central America. The plants are cultivated for their crowns of durable sword shaped leaves, which are harvested and stripped for the durable fibers inside. Sisal is strong, flexible, and versatile. Fore this reason, it is used to make a number of products, including rugs. You should clean a Sisal Rug with care, to prevent it from shrinking and so that surface will stay evenly colored and stain free.

Moisture and humidity can be very hard on sisal. For this reason, a sisal rug should be placed down in a dry place which is unlikely to be subject to spills. It is also important to keep this in mind when you clean a sisal rug. If you clean a sisal rug with a large amount of liquid, the rug may shrink of otherwise distort. In addition, the penetrating liquid may bring dirt to the surface of the rug, resulting in a large stain. If you want the look of a sisal rug in a wet high traffic area, you may want to consider synthetic sisal. Many synthetic products are very close replicas, and cleaning synthetic fiber is much easier.

If any liquid is spilled out on a sisal rug, it needs to be cleaned immediately. Clean a sisal rug by blotting the rug with a dry cloth, making sure not to rub the liquid into the fiber. You may find it helpful to lift the rug up and blot from the under side as well, if this is possible. If a staining liquid such as juice is spilled, clean a sisal rug with a mild soap and water solution or a half vinegar, half water solution. Dip a cloth into the solution, blot the rug, and blot dry. You may need to repeat this, but remember to use a small amount of water to clean a sisal rug so the rug does not absorb the liquid. Dry materials can be scraped off with a blunt edge, such as a wood knife. You can also use dry rug cleaning powder designed specifically for sisal to clean a sisal rug. These products are available at many carpet supply stores, and they have verifying directions for use, depending  on the manufacturer. You should also vacuum a sisal rug regularly to take up accumulated dirt. If you clean a sisal rug with a vacuum on a regular basis, you will also prolong the life of the rug, since imbedded dirt tends to damage the fibers of the rug. Direction on cleaning synthetic sisal vary, depending on the material. In general, synthetic is much more durable. Some synthetic sisal can even be cleaned with a mop, making it a much better choice for areas where spillage is likely. When examining your options, make sure to ask about care directions for the individual synthetic sisal rug that you look at, as each manufacture has different construction techniques and instructions.
